Appropriations Purpose Code 80 Phase-Out

UCOP reporting requirements do not allow general ledger balances under Purpose Code 80.  Effective with the Natural Account Hierarchy update in September 2024 (details here), appropriations natural accounts (beginning with 775BXX) have been reclassified as “revenue” accounts. As a result, the purpose code 80 requirement originally applied during the KFS transition has been removed.  

Moving forward, please note:

• Purpose Code 00 must be used for all accounts under:
• 77502D – Unit Level Appropriation Transfers
• 77510D – Central Campus Appropriations
• The only exception is for Student Financial Aid appropriations, which should continue to use Purpose Code 78 to ensure proper Net Position balance at year-end.

Cleanup Efforts and Next Steps

To support this transition Finance & BIA will adjust all (775BXX) appropriation balances to Purpose 00 (except Purpose 78) during the January 2025 period close. Additionally, Finance & BIA will be reaching out over the coming months to resolve remaining balances in other natural accounts that are still using Purpose Code 80.
